Last month Death Cab For Cutie returned to the spotlight with “You Are A Tourist,” the great first single and video from their forthcoming Codes And Keys. A sunny addition to our spring playlist, it recalls brighter moments of mid-period Cure when it’s not channeling “Float On.” That’s fitting given how Ben Gibbard’s got five Cure covers in his live repertoire. In fact I can’t remember ever seeing seeing the guy perform without hearing some other band’s song in the set. So before we gear up to collectively prematurely evaluate Codes, here’s a listen back at Ben in all his incarnations (DCFC, Postal Service, solo, with Zooey, etc) covering dozens of classics and Avril Lavigne. They’re arranged below worst to best, based on a scientific formula of how cool they are.

Beastie Boys “Make Some Noise” with New Single
“My rhymes age like wine as I get older,” raps Mike D, 45, on the brand new Beastie Boys track he posted to the iconic hip-hop trio’s official site this afternoon. “I’m getting bolder, competition is waning.” As said rhymes and the single’s title, “Make Some Noise,” boast, MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D are aiming to reclaim the spotlight in the uber-competitive genre; a goal this tight, analog-crunchy cut proves is well within their means. The full LP, Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2, is due out May 3 — complete with guest performances by Nas (his collaboration can be heard here) and Santigold. In the meantime, get ready and “Make Some Noise” here or below:
